Northern Light Theater presents Performance Camps For Young People

Northern Light Theatre is delighted to present their Performance Camps for Young People this summer. Now in it’s seventh year of programming, Northern Light Theatre’s performance camps are Edmonton’s only summer theatre camp to combine stage work with history for a unique blend of education and fun.

Accomplished actor, director and arts educator, Maralyn Ryan, will return as Camp Director to guide the troupe of young aspiring performers through their theatrical journey. The students are given the opportunity to explore singing, acting and movement as they rehearse an original play adapted from a significant moment in history. Other Classes include improvisation, theatre games, acting technique which includes stoking the imagination and working in an ensemble.

Summers past have included full productions of Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood and His Merry Men, Beauty and Beast and Sherlock Holmes and the Emerald of Alcazar. This summer is sure to be the spookiest yet as the company walks the fine line between comedy and terror with an original production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Maralyn Ryan’s lengthy career in theatre as an actor, director, instructor, writer, puppeteer, also includes 40 years of Children’s Theatre. She founded and was Artistic Director of the St. Albert Children’s Theatre for ten years, directed The Globe Young People’s Theatre in Regina and the Heritage Park Children Theatre Camp in Fort McMurray, for ten years.

PUBLIC NOTICE : COMMUNITY HALL PARKING LOT and CURB MAINTENANCE

The Pleasantview Community League is in the process of preparations to repair the potholes in the parking lot, broken curbs and handicap ramp, as well as the garbage bins loading area. These areas are past their in need of repair and replacement.

If the funding is secured and the work can be scheduled it is hoped that the work can be completed this year.  They are in beyond the normal maintenance time and waste management has requested repair to prevent damage to their trucks.  Patrons of the community hall would need to park in the area south and north of the hall during their events.

If you have any concerns or would like to view more detail on the plans or the submission for grants feel free to contact the Building Committee Chair, Warren Turner (neighbourhoodwatch@pleasantviewcommunityleague.ca) at 780-439-4572 or the Community League President Tom Stogdale (president@pleasantviewcommunityleague.ca).

President’s Message

Hello and welcome to the “new” Pleasantview Community League.  On Sunday May 6th, the Annual General Meeting was held at the community hall and a number of changes were made to the board.

First of all Fiona Slessor had expressed her wish earlier in the year to step down from the busy role of President so that she could devote more time to her young family.  As a result I put my name forward as a nominee and took over the role from her by approval of the board after the AGM.  Fiona therefore becomes past president and will gradually become less involved, but at the moment she is still busy helping out and will continue helping me going forward.

I’d like to extend a warm thank you to Fiona for her tireless efforts and hope that she and her husband Andrew will remain involved with the League going forward.  Jackie Innes, our previous Past President is also still very much involved with the league as part of the gardening club and is helping with the transition to me also.

Other changes include more new board members including Krysta Berezowski who has taken on responsibility for Grants and Fundraising, Sheila Snoj will be taking over responsibility for Memberships from Mel McGee, Jason Olson is our new Communications director, taking over from Heather Blackman who will still be involved with the league as she is the editor of the PCL Update newsletter, and our final new board member is Shawn Gander who has filled the vacancy for Facilities director.

I would like to extend a very big thank you to those board members who have been involved in the past for all their contributions and also a warm welcome to the new members of the team that look after Pleasantview’s community interests.

The Tuesday following the AGM (8th May) was the first meeting with the new members and a busy one.  During the meeting some new ideas were presented and I will report more on those in the coming weeks and months, but for now rest assured that the PCL board are busy putting new and old ideas into action on your behalf.  We are continuing with some long-term planning started by the members of previous board, while adding some new ideas.

In the coming weeks and months we will be publishing some strategic plans for the community league with the intention of getting feedback from you, the members of the community.  Some of the ideas we have will be much more successful if we have you involved both in preparing and actually enjoying the planned activities.

We’re still looking for a new board member to take over the tasks of the Environment and Parks director, so if you know of anyone in the community who would be interested in taking on this role please let them and us know.

Thank you all for reading and enjoy your spring in Pleasantview.

Tom Stogdale, President president@pleasantviewcommunityleague.ca

Construction on 109/110th Streets and 53rd Ave

For obvious reasons there has been a bit of upset at the construction that is happening on the roads of 109th Street, 53rd Avenue and 110th Street.  It is muddy when wet, dusty when dry and always has the problem of the gravel and stones of the temporary surface being kicked up, damaging vehicle paintwork and worse.

Well the news is mixed I’m afraid.  The good news is that the tunnel crew construction work is expected to be completed by May 25th .  After that, where gravel is on 110th Street can be repaved and this work should be done by the middle of June.

The less good news is the City still have remaining open cut construction on 109 St & N of 53 Ave and 53 Ave & E of 109 St. These are expected to be completed by early August if the weather is good.

For more information, call the City of Edmonton at 311.
